Should I Have Someone Clean My Ductwork

Dan has been in the HVAC industry for 23 years with feel ranging from installation and service to sales and distribution.

Cleaning your ducts will cut down on dust in your home for a long time to come.

Cleaning your ducts will cut down on grit in your abode for a long time to come.

Reduce Dust in Your Home and Save Coin

At that place are many reasons to clean the air ducts in your abode. When ducts are clean, the heating system lasts longer (because there is less clay wearing out its components), we dust less often, and the air we breathe at home is cleaner. For those of usa with allergies, this should be a welcome comeback.

Probably y'all don't own a loftier-powered, truck-mounted vacuum system with 150 human foot-hoses; possibly you can't afford the toll of such service. Simply I am going to tell yous how you can clean air ducts yourself. Sure, yous won't be able to reach every nook and cranny, but you can yet eliminate roughly 85% of the dust in your system without spending any more than the price of your new furnace filter.

There are many different designs of duct systems, such equally attic systems and underground systems, just the theory of cleaning these systems is the same. You lot may not exist able to admission all parts of these systems (for instance, underground ducts), just you tin can brand a difference in your air quality by cleaning the parts of the system that you can reach.

Before we get started, check out this video of what ane of those high-powered, truck-mounted vacuum systems looks like at work on a pretty neglected duct system.

What You Need to Clean Your Air Ducts

  1. Furnace Filter: Y'all volition definitely demand a new furnace filter at the stop of the chore. Make certain yous choose the right filter option for you.
  2. Vacuum: A household-type vacuum with a decent hose attached will work, but a heavier-duty "Store Vac" unit is better, if bachelor.
  3. Castor: Something closely resembling a toilet brush will work best, just a stiff-bristle paintbrush or something like will practise.
  4. Screwdriver or Hex Commuter: Your registers are likely held in identify by some kind of fasteners. You will need to use whatever tool fits the fasteners, commonly a Phillips screwdriver or i/4" hex driver.
  5. Newspaper Towels: Unless you want to exercise a lot of dusting and sweeping correct after y'all clean your ducts, you will find these useful to cover some registers while you make clean others.

Step-by-Stride Duct Cleaning

1. Cover supply registers. Offset past roofing up your supply air registers (openings that supply heated air to the rooms) with paper towels. You do this to keep dislodged dust from globe-trotting into the rooms as you work. Simply lift the register, wrap the paper towel over the top of it, and replace it.

Covering the register helps keep the dust down.

Covering the register helps keep the dust downwardly.

2. Turn on fan. You want the fan running while you are cleaning, to move the dust along that y'all are going to loosen with your banging and brushing. Set the thermostat to "fan on," and shut off the "rut/absurd" way so that only the fan is running. If yous don't have a fan-merely option, you can run the heat, or yous might accept this opportunity to install a newer thermostat with this helpful choice.

3. Check filter. Make sure your old furnace filter is in place, so that the dust you knock loose doesn't end upward getting pulled into the fan motor.

4. Loosen dust in ducts. Knock loose any buildup of dust in the duct work. Merely have the handle of your brush and begin tapping on any accessible duct work you have in the basement. This will assist pause up whatever deposits of dampened dust that may have stuck to the insides of the duct.

5. Clean supply registers. Now you can start sweeping out the dust in your supply registers. With the vacuum running and the finish of the hose nearly the annals, lift the register. Use the hose to catch any dust that is being pushed out by the fan, and proceed to sweep as far into the register'due south piping as your hose can reach. Employ your brush to scuff loose whatsoever built up dust in the annals. Equally you go through the house sweeping out the supply registers, y'all can remove and dispose of the newspaper towels you lot've put in identify.

The registers in the floor should lift out easily.

half dozen. Clean return air registers. Sweep out your render air registers. These volition probable be fastened with a screw and require your tool to remove them. Over again, brush and sweep every bit far back into the register piping or crenel as yous can.

Return air registers are usually mounted to the wall. They gather more dust and dirt than supply registers.

Return air registers are usually mounted to the wall. They get together more dust and dirt than supply registers.

7. Shut off fan and furnace. Close the fan off at the thermostat and the power off to the furnace via the service switch or billow panel. Do non simply shut off the thermostat, because that doesn't turn off the ability to the unit of measurement.

eight. Make clean out blower compartment and return air boot. With the power off, you can remove the panels on the front of the furnace and access the blower compartment and the return air boot. Use your vacuum to sweep up the dust congenital upwards in the blower compartment and return air boot. This is where the great majority of your grit will be. Since you're in here, yous should clean the furnace fan too. Have a expect at the detailed article (with pictures) I wrote, How to Clean a Furnace Fan for a guide on doing this.

9. Replace furnace filter. Ownership a better filter volition definitely cut down on the dust in your dwelling. Simply the amend the filter, the more often you should modify it; a dirty filter restricts the airflow to the fan, which results in the blower motor running hotter and reducing its lifespan. How oft y'all should change your filter depends on your dwelling, your pets, and your location.

My Furnace Filter Recommendation: Filtrete MPR 1000s

I'grand asked a lot about what filter I use. I prefer these Filtrete MPR 1000 filters. They filter a majority of the bad stuff that could be circulating through your home's ductwork, do a great chore keeping the ducts clean over the long haul, and they aren't such a tight filter that they need replacing too oftentimes (like the MPR 1500s, for case). They're just a really good residue between good air and low maintenance.

Accessing Principal Ducts

The areas yous could not attain with the steps above are non likely to comprise a lot of grit and dirt. Notwithstanding, if you are determined to make clean every place you can, in that location are a couple more things you can exercise.

1. Remove end caps from rectangular duct work. If yous accept rectangular duct work, similar in the picture below, you can remove the end caps to admission the within of the ducts. Y'all tin can slide the "drives" downwardly off the duct and pull the cap out of the "slips." So long equally the duct is not butting up confronting the wall, you should exist able to reach your vacuum hose in through the space uncovered past removing the cap, and sweep out any dust yous find. Yous could even use a flashlight to look inside the duct for dirty areas.

The vertical piece of metal on the right is called a drive. It is folded over on the top and bottom of the duct to hold it in place. With a pair of pliers, you can unfold it and pull the drive down off the duct on both sides to detach the two pieces.

2. Clean inside basement registers. Oft duct work will include registers installed throughout the system to distribute air to the basement. If yous remove these registers, you'll gain even further access to the primary body line.

Congratulations!

If you exercise what you can of the items above, you will have made a pregnant dent in the dust in your environs, and you will have washed the best you lot tin can, brusque of calling a professional air duct cleaning visitor.

Questions & Answers

Question: I have vents in every room by the ceiling, and I have no basement. My furnace is in the closet of my ane level house. How tin I clean information technology myself?

Reply: There are many unlike designs of duct systems, such as attic systems and surreptitious systems, but the theory of cleaning these systems is the aforementioned. Yous may not be able to admission all parts of these systems (for example, surreptitious ducts), only you tin can make a divergence in your air quality by cleaning the parts of the organization that you tin can attain.

Question: This is a very helpful commodity, also wondering about how long to exit the fan on for?

Answer: Thank you. I leave my fan run about 345 days a yr.

Question: When cleaning my ventilation ducts, tin can I go out the fan and furnace on if I just desire to vacuum out the cavity below the air register?

Reply: Sure. There's no problem with that.

Question: You say you lot get out your furnace fan running 345 days of the yr; doesn't this increase your utility bill quite a chip?

Answer: Of course it's not gratis simply information technology'due south barely noticeable. The cost of keeping a fan running once information technology'south gotten started is minimal and when you factor in the furnace running less cycles per day it becomes a wash or better sometimes. Then there'southward the condolement of having even temperatures throughout the house. That in itself is worth the times when information technology does perhaps toll me a few dollars a month. I recommend you give it a try. To gauge the price you lot'd actually want to start in a month where there'due south no real need for heating or cooling so y'all can see the impact on your bills. If you start now (winter) it'southward difficult because of course your bill is going to be higher than last month so how much of that is a issue of running the fan is difficult to detect. Perchance y'all can compare to terminal year at this time and run into bold your electric hasn't gone up.

Question: I have the large air filters (24x16x5). Tin can I add together filters to the render air grills and eliminate the large Honeywell filter?

Reply: Actually, that's a pretty standard size for a residential system. That said, there'south no real fashion to practise this, and it would not be financially a good idea if you could. If the furnace is in the home in that location are ways to put the filter correct in the lesser of the furnace itself, but otherwise, I hate to say information technology, but information technology would be difficult to do much about this situation other than to call a visitor to do a semi-annual maintenance for you. I understand the inconvenience, but again, it would exist hard or expensive or both to rearrange this. A cheesecloth over the vents would be an option merely would be a lot to change them regularly. It wouldn't catch all that goes into the system, and y'all would desire to remove the main filter. I would fifty-fifty more so recommend a servicing once or twice a yr since the blower volition likely dingy up faster so you might every bit well just allow them change the filter and save the other efforts.

Question: Are solid square ducts better and cleaner than collapsable types?

Answer: Cleaner yes. Better? Depends on how they're installed only if proper, then not really. They each fill up the need they are designed for. I personally would use hard duct whenever I can merely flex duct is necessary in sure applications.

Question: I have dust around my ceiling registers in some rooms and my filter on return register gets dusty and dirty in less than a month. Will cleaning higher up help?

Answer: Cleaning never hurts just every house is different with a lot of factors that make up one's mind how dusty a firm gets and how fast.

Question: I think a lot of dust got sucked into my ceiling ducts. I tin make clean one mean solar day and write my name in the dust the next day. What exercise you recommend?

Reply: My commodity is intended to make things "improve" for homeowners who may not exist able to afford a pro cleaning or merely to perform upkeep and improve their air quality. Ceiling ducts are often connected to flexible ducting and then the theory is the same, but you have to be careful not to tear the interior liner. And so, carefully practise the best you lot tin can simply if y'all want every nook and cranny and tin can afford it, hire a pro. (Don't forget that keeping your fan running helps make clean your air and if you use a pleated filter, you lot can practise even ameliorate. Possibly have to alter it more often, but it's definitely worth information technology. Did I say run the fan? I always tell people this and they don't heed. I guess it goes against our instincts or something.)

Question: Will leaving the fan running year round increase the utility neb and how nigh turning off the pilot lite?

Respond: I leave my fan run approximately 340 days a yr and notice very little if any impact on my electrical bill. As for the pilot, I would plow mine off if I had one merely I am comfy knowing how to and remembering to relight it when the autumn rolls effectually. No sense called-for up gas for 6 months for no reason.

Question: Tin round flex ducts be cleaned?

Reply: Yes. More carefully and not perfectly merely yeah.

Question: Every time we turn on the heat we get a aroma throughout the trailer which smells similar poop, and we immediately get nauseous. Whatsoever suggestions on what the cause may be?

Answer: A bad heat exchanger can make an awful smell, and those are symptoms of CO exposure then I would definitely take it checked out and get a CO detector immediately. Frequently times a heat exchanger volition have a 20 year warranty on it.

Question: How often should we clean our ducts?

Answer: I would recommend having the furnace cleaned annually simply the ducts less oftentimes. It really depends on the person (allergies, etc.) and the home (number of pets, etc.).

Question: How do I get rid of a musty odor in my house?

Answer: For a quick fix, placing dryer sheets on the air filter could help. Just be certain they are on the right side of the filter so they don't get sucked into the blower and utilize a clean filter.

Question: Would information technology aid proceed dust down by putting cheesecloth on your vents permanently?

Answer: Y'all would have to change them similar any other filter and make sure they aren't restricting airflow, but your chief filter takes care of most of this. It would probably be more piece of work and maintenance than its worth.

Question: When cleaning air ventilation ducts, do I run just the fan or the fan on absurd? Should the thermostat be in absurd or heat mode?

Answer: Yous get out everything you would every bit normal only switch the fan to "on". The rest of the system volition withal operate as it normally would, simply the fan will continue to run betwixt cycles.

Question: Are registers and vents the aforementioned thing?

Answer: The terminology gets confusing, merely yes. There are return air registers/vents that depict air back to the fan and should not accept a fashion to close and supply air vent bring conditioned air back to the rooms and usually tin can be shut via a damper of some sort. Whether in the floor, on the wall, or in the ceiling they are all registers/vents.

Question: When cleaning the render ducts should all registers exist covered to prevent grit from going thru the firm while the fan is on?

Answer: I believe that's mentioned in this commodity. I would recommend it, yes.

We live in an old home with a large furnace that was converted from coal, to oil, and than to gas. In that location is a pilot low-cal that stays on 365 days a year and it is forced air ( no fan ).

Does this make any difference for cleaning the vents with the vacuum ? Also, I practise replace the furnace filters, but for whatever reason they never seem to do much (( IE they are never dirty )).

Patrick on May 06, 2022:

Cheers for your article.

We recently purchased a house and information technology turns out the heating ducts are made of Transite. The house is one story and all ducts are in the slab. We've had the air tested for asbestos, and there is none, but the ducts do indeed comprise asbestos.

I have two questions.

We had a company clean the ducts. They desire to charge $700 (oasis't paid notwithstanding because job is non complete). They've supposedly cleaned the ducts twice now, simply at that place is a large amount of rodent poop, debris, sand, etc. yet in them. Information technology seems like this visitor either doesn't know how to make clean ducts or isn't capable of doing then. They plain didn't cover the heat registers while they were cleaning because the entire business firm is now covered in grit. Extremely frustrating because we just had the floors cleaned and cleaned all of the shelving.

Question one: How would you proceed with this?

I've read online the best thing to do with in-slab ducts is to fill up them with concrete, cap them off, and figure out another way to supply heat to the house.

Question two: What are options here? I've researched estrus pumps a bit, but really don't want to install them every bit they would destroy the exterior artful of the house. Only I'grand thinking they might be the only selection since it is a single story firm on a slab. At that place is an attic that is accessible.

Calculation things similar air cleaner and UV light to the system can help long term with some of this but having the a/c scroll cleaned and checked (the indoor evaporator coil) is a good start if you lot've non had that done before. I have a sewage gas smell coming from air ducts. What would you suggest?

Dan Reed (author) on May 17, 2022:

I would definitely need more info than this to help simply will say outset affair is to check your filter. Also, when is the concluding time the coils indoor and outdoor were cleaned? If the unit is running proper and you lot're not getting air, these are the usual suspects.

Ivana Alfieri on May 16, 2022:

I have three air units in my restaurant and zip is coming out of vents or very trivial air .

Dan Reed (author) on March 08, 2022:

Colleen - I presume you have underground ducting so and you would need to take them cleared and sealed which will likely require a fair amount of money and a professional person. If they aren't underground and you lot're experiencing this and so it sounds like your ducts are in need of insulating considering they are in an unconditioned space and the inner and outer temps are creating condensation. Cheers for reading.

Colleen Vincelli on March 07, 2022:

what happens when you have a lot of water in your air ducts..nosotros merely have central air, not heating ?

Dan Reed (author) on January sixteen, 2022:

Thank you Greenmind!

GreenMind Guides from USA on Jan 15, 2022:

Hey great hub with lots of good info and communication. I like the manner you lot write and you clearly know what you're talking about.

violet shrop on January 09, 2022:

Thank you lot so much Daniel-

Dan Reed (author) on January 06, 2022:

Violet Shrop - Thank y'all and no. You don't want the ability off while cleaning registers...you lot desire the fan running. At present one time you lot get to the furnace itself, at the end and you're ready to change the filter and wrap up...yes. Turn off the power.

Thanks for reading.

VioletShrop on January 06, 2022:

This is really well written & helpful. Just to make sure: so to clean your return register, y'all don't demand to shut the ability off? I wouldn't think and so either, mine looks like yours, only a space under the hvac cabinet, no electrical element seen. Thanks.

Dan Reed (author) on January 03, 2022:

Tyler - Yes. If the breaker to the furnace is off, you should be safe under normal circumstances. A elementary voltage detector is always nice to have though to exist sure. You just impact information technology to anything and if there is voltage, information technology will blink and/or beep. Only costs similar $20 and is useful for many things. Cheers for reading.

Tyler on January 02, 2022:

If I switch off the billow, and then I tin can touch everything on the unit at the intake right? Thanks Daniel this is awesome.

Dan Reed (writer) on Dec 29, 2022:

DCME - Nothing really happens. You just won't be able to make clean that expanse without getting up in that location. If you get as much as you lot tin can, y'all're notwithstanding doing something.

DCME on December 12, 2022:

some of the supply registers are in a valeted ceiling. since i tin can't tech them what happens

Dan Reed (author) on November 24, 2022:

Christine - I think you're misunderstanding. I'm recommending yous encompass the supply registers, not the return and but temporarily, not forever. It would take a lot more than a paper towel over the supply registers for a few minutes to burn down up a motor. Specially on the supply side. If information technology were return air, I'd say you're right simply even and so, information technology would accept a lot more than than a newspaper towel and few minutes to crusade any sort of impairment to the motor.

christine on Nov xix, 2022:

roofing the registers and running the fan volition burn out the fan. bad idea.

D. Bunch on October 23, 2022:

We bought an older mobile domicile over a twelvemonth ago. I bought a moisture dry vac and it didn't have plenty suction power to vacuum the floor duct. The return air is disconnected. I run window a.c. units and take merely floor estrus. There are blockages in the duct. So, is a store vac ameliorate than moisture/dry vac? I demand estrus badly before wintertime arrives.

Dan Reed (author) on October xiii, 2022:

Bill - The metallic shouldn't hold the smell and you lot probably won't be able to make clean it all unless yous disconnect it then for the time and effort, I'd supervene upon the damaged duct and registers rather than attempt and make clean them.

Bill on October 08, 2022:

Hi, simply bought a business firm where previous owner allowed dogs to urinate all over air vents. Some urine must have leaked downwards air ducts. What is best manner to clean air ducts?

Dan Reed (author) on October 08, 2022:

Mila - Non all ducts can feasibly be reached and vertical ducts in the wall are non usually the main culprit in holding grit. This commodity is well-nigh doing a pretty darn good job on your own only not necessarily to go to every nook and cranny. Thank you lot for reading!

Mila on October 06, 2022:

I have air exchanger the pips are in the wall.Haw tin I make clean them my selfish?

Kim Spraggins on September 27, 2022:

After trying to discover as good bargain on air duct cleaning I thought most researching how to do it ourselves and I'm so glad I did! This rehab house has been sitting for ix yrs and only God knows what's been lurking and swirling effectually for the 2+yrs since nosotros installed the furnace. Now with two cats everything gets covered in dust especially in the summertime with no cardinal air, just high-powered flooring fans. I bake cakes and have to turn them all off to go along the dust, lint, cat hair etc from landing in them! Eeek...and when the sunday shines through the window the dust becomes even more visible! Grit, dust, grit...I can't take it any more than and volition exist and then happy when we're done with this DIY project! Update to follow! Thanks so much!!!! Mmmwah

Kristen Howe from Northeast Ohio on May 02, 2022:

Daniel, these were swell tips on how to clean the air vents yourself with simple and easy steps. Voted up for useful!

MarkE on April 10, 2022:

I would like to add that a lot of the dust is from your home and generally plant in your return vents and return ducting because every bit information technology pulls the air into the ducting from your house, along with the dust and moisture, some of information technology volition gravitate towards the bottom of the ducting due to

one) gravity

ii) moisture condensing

three) static electricity

Your supply vents ought to be relatively clean in comparison due to the fact that in that location is an air filter upstream from the supply vents preventing any dust , usually, from going any further than the filter. However in that location will be some albeit a lot less in whatever event.

Banging on the outside of your vents may release some dust but opening upwardly the vents at their ends if possible will allow you lot to vacuum a heck of a lot more dust.

I am replacing every bit many joist liners as possible, because information technology is relatively cheap and gets rid of any rust, mold, leaner, and of course grit that you lot may or may not meet.

Skilful luck in your ventures, may the wind e'er exist at your back!

Dan Reed (author) on July 25, 2022:

Well, if information technology's only a piece, I'd throw it away. It's likely a scrap piece that's been in in that location longer than you may have realized and in your cleaning, worked information technology's way to visibility. Unfortunately, much droppings establish in duct is from structure and people using the duct every bit a dustpan. If you don't see whatsoever parts missing or holes in the ducting, then just toss it and know that they're that much cleaner.

Nina on July 24, 2022:

Prior to reading your article, I cleaned my ductwork with a shop vac and it worked really well. The adjacent day I constitute a piece of ductwork in i of the floor registers. Not certain what to do about it. Whatever help is much appreciated.

Dan Reed (author) on July 09, 2022:

Jeremy - I allow all comments. Particularly ones similar this considering information technology gives me the opportunity to educate people. First off, if you really read the article, I clearly state this is a pretty expert mode to go if you don't have the coin for professionals. I'thou guessing you're a duct cleaner and don't want me showing people a dainty alternative that will salvage them coin and improve their air quality far more than than doing nothing. My articles are not aimed to assistance or hurt anyone's concern...only to help people who can't afford such services to exercise the best they can to help themselves enjoy these luxuries when it'due south within their ability to do so. I stand up by every word in this commodity. With over 20 years in HVAC from loading trucks to currently running large commercial projects and everything in between, I think the professionals are already on it. Thanks for reading...or kind of anyway.

Jeremy on July 09, 2022:

lol!! Yous think this compares to a real cleaning in any way? Not fifty-fifty close. Some jobs should exist left to the professionals.

Dan Reed (author) on November 19, 2022:

Yes. It is expensive. Glad I could help.

Candice on November nineteen, 2022:

I was just quoted betwixt $300 and $600 to clean my ducts. I refuse to pay that. So I'll be doing this myself and I greatly appreciate this how to.

Dan Reed (author) on July 01, 2022:

Thanks bleedercleaners. Aye and the skilful news is, in a new home, if you clean the ducts really well right after the habitation is built, yous will cut down on much of the dust forever. Unfortunately, in a new abode, the drywall and sawdust oft gets into and is swept into the heat vents. Get it now and it can help a lot.

bleedercleaners on June 30, 2022:
